Seems pretty likely to me that the killer had some pretty severe mental illness. Doesn't appear to have known the victim, had no obvious motive to be angry at him, let alone hack him up, and the fact that they're saying there may have been cannabalism... only the most deranged, disturbed, psychopathic killers generally do that.

I'm not against the death penalty, generally speaking, but this guy is not wired right and should at least get a chance- in the most secure mental facility in existance- to see if medication can make him not a threat to society. I don't think he should be allowed to live independently ever, even if his dangerous behavior is put into check with medication, but I don't agree with executing people who committed crimes while in the throes of psychosis or delusions, which I'm guessing this guy was.

OTOH, if he has a record of violent crimes, or if he's not mentally ill but was strung out on drugs or something, then I would have no problem with the death penalty.
