Both good teams, the 79-80 team was burned out from so many Cup runs though. Many, many injuries on that team. And the goaltending wasn't so hot. When Lafleur got hurt in the playoffs, that was the end of the dynasty. We would have run into the Islanders at some point anyway and we weren't in top form (they were).

The 88-89 team should have won the Cup. That's the best team that hasn't won in my memory.

But from what I've read, the 1945 Canadiens were heavily favored to win and were upset. The 1955 Canadiens probably would have won if the Rocket wasn't suspended. The '54 Canadiens lost in game 7 of the finals in OT on a fluke goal. In fact, if not for a couple bounces, the Canadiens could have won the Cup from 53-61.
