That wasn't the only reason why he signed for the amount he did. Paul Kariya was 28 years old at the time. He signed for 1.8 million because it would make him a TRUE UFA prior to 31, an extra 2 seasons to be exact (ah...the old CBA). By signing w/ the Avs for 1 year, it allowed him to hit the open market much earlier.

Secondly, that team was almost an instant cup ring on paper (just not on the ice).

There was much at play w/ the Paul Kariya/COL signing, not just a wish to play w/ Teemu.
