Edmonton gets a bonified first line Sniper with two years on his contract. They can afford to give up 3 roster players as there is a log jam at forward and defense.
Atlanta gets 3 roster players for less money then Kovalchuk. A top line player to replace Kovalchuck and two decent young up and comers to help with their rebuild.
Value is moderately fair.
But Edmonton becomes a worse team with this trade. They lose their best faceoff man, best PKer, and #1 centre, lose a second line forward who will one day be one of their best PKers and potentially a #1 centre, and they lose their best young stay at home d-man. Sure, it upgrades the offense, but looking at the Oilers, offense isn't what needs an upgrade.
Makes no sense for the Oil to do this. Even though the value is probably in the Oilers' favor, it makes Atlanta a better team and Edmonton a much worse one.
