If we are looking Habs cap space situation from the trade deadline's viewpoint, it should also be kept in mind that NHLPA has hinted, that they would announce their decision regarding the future of the CBA around January 2009 and not wait untill the final deadline of March 2009. Taking NHLPA's statements for what they are worth, I would still suspect that around deadline the CBA's future is already known, and most likely the bonus cushion is back and available.

For Habs that will mean at least 2,3 million extra in cap space. Briesebois' contract has bonuses for 750K, Price's contrac has bonuses for around 1,350 million and S.Kostitsyn's contract include some 200K in bonuses.

So without making any additional moves, Habs are going to have plenty of cap space for deadline additions. With Gainey's comments I would be quite confident that we won't see additional moves by the management untill the season is well underway. Only remaining move is to decide who is going to be the one player that won't fit into roster (currently 24 players in roster).
