Yes 3.5 million is a lot but it is easily covered by the loss of Perreault and Dackell's contracts (with room to spare).
Include into the equation that
Now Huet is cheaper than Garon so we save money.
Quintal out saves us more cash.
Sundstrom at 2 mill will not be qualified (may or may not come back for less).
Dowd possibly gone.
As well 5 Home playoff games increased our revenues.
There should still be the money to sign kovalev too.
I totally agree and was thinking the same thing.
Gainey said that they had room in their budget for Bonk and no one here knows for sure if that included Kovalev at 4.25 million too. I think it does, I also think it is a sign to Kovalev that Montreal was going to address some other needs and that they were looking to become a team with potential scoring on 3 lines not 2.
With Q, Garon, Perreault, Juneau, Dackell and IMO Sundstrum is now out of the picture the money is there to sign both of those players. Sure we need to sign some RFA's in Ribs, Ryder, Zed, Begin, Souray and UFA's in Langdon and Dowd (Dowd I believe is gone too) but it won't be that much higher and a team has that budgeted too. Not to mention we own the option on re-signing Dags at 500,000...he is gone IMO too.
According to my Hockey News we have 11 players under contract for 23,930,000 - 1.1 million in Garon + 3.5 in Bonk + $ 425,000 in Huet (he is an RFA, but will only get his 10% qualifing I'm sure) so we have a current roster at 27,855,000, but - 500,000 of Dags and we have 27,355,000 in signed players now.
So by re-signing Kovalev, re-signing our free agents and bring up our kids who won't make much because Hossa and Hainsey (1 year deals like Ribs and Ryder last year) will make way less than they did before if they are willing to take a one-way deal instead of two-way deals, plus Higgins is just over a million +. Both would rather one-way deals knowing they are going to be on the team, and if not they are getting paid good money in Hamilton...either way they win because they make their money and if they pull a season like Ryder they re-new their contracts and make money then.
We very well could be younger, better and cheaper than we were last season in total salary.
Sure Audette is stilling being paid out, but that mistake will be done and forgotten about if this can all come together.
BG won't give up on Kovalev, he paid a big price in Balej and 2nd round pick Graham to get him...he will try to have him back, if not I see another UFA like Murray coming here.
On another note I can see Bonk playing to his potential, he has something to prove and it would be best to comeback and haunt your team...especially when that team is a division rival just down the Highway.
Good trade by BG and good draft choice in Chipchura, sure he isn't the offensive wizard some teams may have drafted. But in a couple of years if he turns into a solid two way player in the mold of a Linden type we potentially have a Selke player like a Carbonneau here once again, plus we are deep in offensive talent with Higgins, Kats, Perezhogin, Urqhart, Lambert, Milroy and the list goes on. We really needed this depth pick, who knows injury free next year he maybe able to find that offensive touch?
