I've suffered a couple of concussions when I was younger. The last thing you feel like doing is lying down. It's like being really drunk, when you lie down you start to get the spins.
My guess by the spaced out look on his face is that he definitely suffered a concussion.
This is not a time to say goodbye. This is a time to say 'thank you'.
