Although not impossible, I think that it would be difficult for Montreal.

Some of the main reasons why it makes sense for Toronto are that:

1. There are a lot more people in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and in fact the Golden Horse Shoe to support a second team.

2. Not only the people of the GTA and the Golden Horse Shoe (all the cities around Lake Ontario), there is the entire South and South Western Ontario that includes major Canadian cities like London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Hamilton and even Kingston from the other side to draw from.

3. Many people who live in Southern Ontario that do not live in the GTA have a great disdain for anything and anyone from Toronto, in much the same way the Americans are frowned upon by rest of the world because of their obnoxious, ego centric ways and their own jealousy of the Americans.

In fact, if you were to go and poll these people, you would easily find that their most hated team is the Maple Leafs. These people LOVE hockey just like the rest of Canada and would LOVE to have another NHL team that they can drive to within a couple of hours from their homes and cheer for.

Montreal doesn't really have any of these situations that would help their cause.
