That play is a staple of the Red Wings break out. Seems to work for them.

I am not saying Gauthier made a great play, but his reason for making it was because his initial read was taken away and he went with his secondary read, which he was forced to do because of the pressure of the Wings. Simply put, the Wings had to do something to cause Gauthier to make a "bonehead" play... but for the pressure it wouldn't have happened and there wouldn't have been a goal. Thus, it is "earned" in the same way that a deflection goal from a pass off of Lidstrom's skate was.

I am not positing that either of these goals were immaculate or a clear showing of dominance... only that they are more like one another than not.
