Renney also can't be marked on the brief stint he had in his only previous NHL coaching job, with the Vancouver Canucks, when his clashes with Mark Messier doomed any chance Renney had of taking control of the team.

Renney isn't Jacques Martin or Joel Quenneville, who were available. Renney lacks the clout to win power struggles with a player like Messier, but Messier shouldn't be back next season and with the possible exceptions of Jaromir Jagr and Bobby Holik, there isn't a player who could threaten Renney's authority in the room.

Apparently JR, Sherry Ross and many who reported on this story mentioned Messier's potential impact on this situtation and Sather brought up the status quo.

Are you telling me Messier has not had some control or impact on past Ranger coaches. Everything I read seems to indicate otherwise.

Even Stan Fischler was on Msg last night and talked specifically about Messier and his potential involvement with next year's team with regard to the lockeroom and the next coach. Fischler said he should be asst coach if he wants to be involved.
