TSN - Expected 2009-2010 Cap at $55M

According to a report in the Globe and Mail, an NHL source says that barring a miraculous recovery by the economy, players stand to lose all their escrow money, which would essentially drop the salary cap from $56.7 million this season to about $48 million next season.

The source told the Globe and Mail the salary cap is expected to drop for the first time next season, but only to about $55 million. But with revenues expected to drop during the course of next season, the difference would be made up from the players' escrow fund.
If it goes that ugly, man, the Flyers might be in some trouble. I think we are committed to something like 9 players for $39M (Briere, Richards, Gagne, Carter, Hartnell, Lupul, Cote, Timonen, Sbisa.)

If the economy looks like it might be turning around, I wouldn't be shocked to see the NHL and NHLPA agree to tinker with the kicker option to get the $55M to $56.7M and keep it flat for one season.
