I've heard the notion of a shootout coach before, just i haven't heard of a team that's done it. Either way, I didn't necessarily mean a shootout coach, but maybe a coach taking responsibility for the shootout. It's more important than it looks. Yes, it was said you don't practice for something you shouldn't be reaching. Yes, fine, practicing what to do after 65 minutes is odd, i get it. You shouldn't be on the PK either, but it happens, penalties happen, OT happens. Personally, I'm shocked that last year and this year koivu actually scores with the same move every time. Even markov, he's got 1 move. Last year andrei did backhand to forehand a million times. They don't need to practice how to handle a puck(mind you kovalev does anyway and he's argueably the best at it). Of course they know how to shoot but the opportunity for them to try and practice more creative things helps. Not to mention, in preparation for a match, a coach knowing in depth the weakness of an opposing goalie helps. Yes, they know, they do their homework, I'm not niave, but how much they spend on it is a different story. PPs or PKs can be non-factors in a game, but a SO is final, there's no second chance, extra time on the clock, thats it. That alone can always cost a point or gain one.
