Solid. Patient and solid. Those would be the key descriptors for the first period. The Flames closed down the blue line and played very well in the neutral zone. Everyone was finishing hits, and there were more than a few. The passing all period was very crisp, especially the outlet passes which set up a few great odd man rushes. They also crashed the net and generally created no end of havok in the Wild zone. Very very good start to the game.

The penalty kill was, well flawless. Again. They did everything that I always extol, and did it very very well. They pressured the puck, made the smart plays with the sticks to block passes, and got the puck down the ice. Miikka was superb, making a few very big saves to keep the game tied at nothing at that point. Nothing to report for the power play as the Flames did not enjoy any such advantages.

Bertuzzi has been a man possessed that period. He was doing everything out there and was the reason the Flames have the lead after one. Heck that whole line of Bertuzzi-Langkow-Bourque was great. Every time they hit the ice the Wild fell back on their heels. Pardy continues to impress with his smart defensive plays. What a stick play by him to defuse a potential 2 on 1. Conroy is still playing above any expectations. He's been absolutely magnificent on our pk. I think he may be a big part of the reason for the continued success of the PK
