The Pens are in danger of missing the playoffs for a number of reasons:
1) They have played the ENTIRE season without their best defenseman, Gonchar. Believe it or not, Gonchar is almost as important to their power play as Malkin and Crosby are, and their power play is the biggest difference between last season and this season for them.
2) A good chunk of their season was played without their starting goaltender. Dany Sabourin started 16 games for them.
3) Last season, they "Went for it." They took a shot by trading away some of their depth for Hossa. You can't blame them, the move took them to the Finals. But it set them back a bit because it cost them some depth.
I don't think we'd even be talking about the playoffs if we didn't have Staal for the entire season and Lundqvist was injured for a while.
Oh yeah, they need a coaching change, too.
