I'd say im on the side of the league on this one
league wide revenues, tv ratings are down, alot teams are losing money alot of money
the nhl is the only league of the 4 major sports leagues (if you can even call the nhl one of the 4 major leagues in the U.S. anymore) that doesn't have a some sort of a salarycap type system, and they are the ones that need it the most.
I'm all for players getting paid alot of money, but it has to be in porportion to what the teams are makeing. look at the nfl and nba there salarycap goes up or down year to year.
they presented 6 different proposals to the union and they would even think about accepting one of them? comeon
It doesnt have to be a hard salarycap like the nfl it coul be like the nba with a luxary tax if a team goes over and then they can't sign any free agents, but even then the teams get a 4.5 mill exception to use each year and a 1.2 mill(not sure on how much the veterens exception is) veterens exception. and max contracts you know the whole deal. that is a very flexable cap system and the players still get paid very very well
the players just need to accept that, that current economic conditions in the nhl require one.
Granted that a salarycap wouldn't slove all the nhl's problems(and there are a WHOLE lot of them) but it would be a step.
Players salarys aren't the only reason the league is losing money its because there putting out a diloutted product( lack of
and for other reasons) but some sort of a salary cap would be a huge step toward fixing the fiancial aspect of the game
the players should just make more of an effort to come to terms with the league... besides they're not goona make the money their making now anywhere else... you think modo is gonna give forsberg 11 mill
chances are there will be a long lockout 1-2 seasons(hopefully not) because it seems like the two sides are playing a game of chicken this will only hurt the league and if it goes to 2 seasons you can count on losing more than a few franchises (which might not be such a bad thing seeing as how there are too many teams in bad hockey markets)
i just hope they get this settled... i don't think i can last 2 years without hockey!!
