very good point, while end results are the ultimate measuring stick, some gm's work from a considerable handicap and yet produce competitive teams...

holland, lou, sutter, wilson, polie, regier, chiarelli (though this offseason will be a huge test for him), holmgren... all of these G.M's rate among the top of the league imo.

I find it hard to put gainey in that category...

amazing that people can, in the same sentence, applaud his success using last year's -injury free- regular season as the main evidence, and excuse this year's performance because injuries aren't his fault... which one is it?

by next season, his success/failure will be made clear. I hope he's got something up his sleeve for the next 5-6 months, but if the team isn't a clear-cut top 3-4 in the conference next season, his 7th as GM, then there will be no more room to hide/find excuses.
