It may not be Gainey's preferred approach, but it just may work.

The proble with the trade route, as some have pointed out, is that when the team in not playing well, and no one has great stats, it is hard to get much for the player you trade.

HOWEVER.........this may be the ideal time to re-sign players to deals that don't break the bank. In other words, when the value is high, you can trade guy, but when his value is low, you could SIGN him for less!

Right now, I would guess that all of the following players could be signed for less than they would have signed for 3 months ago:

Plekanec (RFA)
Higgins (RFA)
