The next time someone asks "can our power play be any worse?", those of you who attended tonight's game should give them a resounding "YES!" That may be the worst power play I've ever seen in my life. There was no movement WHATSOEVER. Huselius looked like he didn't even care out there on the 5v3 at the point. A Lower-C power play is better executed. Claude Noel should be sacked, and then re-hired, and then sacked again.
I don't think Mason had his best game. He looked a little sluggish to me. Rinne bounced back quite well from a bad game against the Oilers and made several really good saves, particularly that one in the first period (which was as much luck as positioning), and then a great save on a 2v1 where he bailed out De Vries on a bad turnover.
Legwand didn't find the back of the net but I thought he had another beast of a game. I really like our top 9 right now and think those three lines (SAD, ELW, PFT) are pretty much set for the rest of the season, and I have zero problem with it.
I was convinced that Jones would see very little, if any ice time the rest of the game after that first period. I thought he looked bad, and took a pretty untimely penalty, but he bounced back strong in the second with a great play out of the corner (though I think Mason should have had that shot) to tie the game. He does make some mistakes, but it's still good to see him getting minutes.
I think the organization showed a great deal of confidence in the players by not overpaying to make a move (though it would've been nice) and the players came out and responded very well in the first game after the deadline. It was truly a great game to watch because it was so back and forth for a long time. We got chances, then Columbus got chances, then we got more chances and neither team could pull away until Sullivan buried a beauty of a breakaway goal just over Mason's glove. It felt like a playoff game to me, although it would have helped to have a slightly larger crowd tonight.
Can't help but walk away smiling from this one. I think the tone is very well-set for the next meeting between these two clubs, and if we pull that one out, we might get into Columbus' collective head a little bit. Wouldn't have any problem with that at all.
I'd also like to see Russell get pounded by a nice, clean open-ice hit in that next game.
