Well to use a term that was given to me when I graduated college:
Take employee 1 who is strong at X and weak at Y and combine him with employee 2 who is strong at Y and weak at X.
That seems to be the biggest problem, going with one or the other. If you mix and match, it will work towards YOUR advantage. See my above post for more details.
