Boy am I tired of these Poti discussions. I don't even like the guy much, but I always get roped into these.
Poti lead the Rangers in offense his first year as a Ranger for about 45 games, not 25. This included the first 25 or so when Leetch was healthy and playing, and included the stretch while Leetch and Bure were out. Poti's offense that year kept right on chugging along until injuries and Alex Kovalev showed up. Look it up on the month to month breakdowns if you like. And even when it did finally dry up, he still managed to finish 7th overall as a scoring Dman.
You know what I hate about arguing about defensive play? No facts. I can point out that Poti's played on a simply awful Rangers team for the last three years (and on some less than stellar Oiler teams before that) and his +/- isn't that bad. (Check out much more well regarded Eric Brewer, or even historically Rob Blake if you want to compare.) And of course you'll either reply "I saw him suck" or give me some anecdotal example of him blowing his assignment. Thing is, anecdotal evidence proves nothing. If you watch every Devils game, you'll see Scott Stevens blow his assignment or get beat every now and again. Heck, Chris Chelios had a puck bounce in off his skate just the other night in World Cup play. Does that make them bad defensemen? Of course not. But only the public perception backs that up.
In sum, you say Poti sucks defensively and doesn't try because that's your observation. I say he's played 20-25 minutes a night against top competition on one of the 5-10 worst defensive teams in hockey for the last two years, and his +/- over that span isn't a problem. (It bears mentioning that HoF Leetch suffered much worse +/- campaigns during the Rangers playoff drought, and most Ranger fans will defend his own-zone play to the death.) How can Poti be THAT bad if his +/- always hovers around even while playing huge minutes on a crummy team? I'm not nominating him for the Norris or anything, but if he's really that dreadful, shouldn't there be some statistical evidence to back-it-up? Can you point to any hard facts that assert that he's really that much of a liability defensively, or are you just going to assert your opinion in the face of numbers that seem to suggest otherwise?
When Sather took over the year before last, the Rangers defense did kick ass for a few months. Their offense sucked and they couldn't win games, but GAA dropped through the floor. Rodent did a terrific statistical break-down of that stretch shortly after the fact. I believe the Rangers were second only to the Senators in GAA during the span.
Can never get a SOG? Last season Poti had 124 SOG, and as I said, he wasn't even used as a PP shooter. Karel Rachunek, asked to play a similar role for the high-octane Ottawa Senators, actually posted only 120 SOG, and he played five more games than Poti did. The year previous, when Poti was allowed to shoot and stayed healthy, he put 148 SOG. That's a pretty good number.
In all honesty, I never understand why people get so upset with Poti. He's Alex Kovalev all over again. Tons of talent, but a tendency to make that one big *****-up every now and again. Kovalev I hate. He's All-World and always reserves his absolute worst for the Rangers. Poti at least has some nice stretches at MSG.
