I am not sure how they are doing the crossover this season.
There is no crossover rule in the Eastern Conference since both divisions in the East have 7 teams. The Western Conference, however, has 1 division with 7 teams and 1 with 8 so if the 5th place team in the division with 8 teams has more points than the 4th place team in the division with 7 teams, the 5th place team will compete in the other division's playoff.

BTW, the AHL, unlike the NHL, does not have a "conference" playoff format where the top 8 teams make the playoffs. The AHL has a divisional playoff format. This is done to keep travel costs down. is offline   Reply With Quote
