NCAA wasn't that well scouted in the early 80s compared to today. Oates carried a team to the national championships, he was sure to get an offer.

That's true. 9 rounds in the early 2000s is a better comparable.

I think my point still stands though, a lot of teams would be taking chances on a lot of these guys in the 8th and 9th.
