Him and Higgins went to Gainey around Christmas to get new contracts and Gainey said that he won't re-sign anyone until after the season is over.

This concept of waiting is something a lot of uneducated hockey fans simply cannot grasp, due to their complete inability to understand the job of a General Manager. Thus, you have unfounded rumours of players about to leave or wanting more money, simply because, "If the team wanted them to stay, they would sign them now".
