Let's not turn this into the old "should righthanded people shoot left or right" debate again. It varies by person. Let him try both ways and see which feels right to him, or find a straight-bladed stick and see which way he holds it.

Re: the mouthgard - aside from concussions, there are cosmetic reasons for it, too. Even with a full face shield, he'll take the occasional knock under the chin that can make the lower teeth hit the upper and chip them. I have minor chipping on pretty much all my front teeth after years of hockey and rugby with no mouthguard (dumb, I know, but I grew up not using one and never could get used to it later on.)
