Also, when we look at the big picture (beyond Richards and Carter), you have to know that the CHL has a serious vested interest in not allowing players in this situation leave its league when a gentleman's agreement exists in principle and probably in the letter of the law, too. The extent would go far beyond Richards and Carter. The CHL would have a mass exodus of players, and it would crush the league. I also don't have data to back up my next claim, but I don't see how it can be good on an economic level for the (mostly) small Canadian towns that are home to these teams.
