September 14, 2004 - 11:30 PM EDT

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada – The NHL Officials Association recently released a statement saying their members would not officiate lower-level games in the event the upcoming NHL season is delayed due to a labor disruption.

“We recognize the importance of supporting our fellow officials and will not infringe on any part of their livelihood and continued development as officials in the event of our members being without work,” said NHL referee and NHLOA president Stephen Walkom.

The statement comes after much speculation that NHL officials would skate in lower-level professional and major junior leagues.

Officials will not be paid in the event of a disruption – but they will continue to receive medical benefits and will have the opportunity to receive “advances” on future paychecks.
