No you don't. If you have a knob sized to fit in your hand well your stick does not go flying out.

I have my knob sized so that it pretty much perfectly fits the negative space formed when my hand is in it's natural relaxed curl. I don't have to put much effort into holding it there, and I put ridges in it so it stays very well. I think I've lost my stick in game play all of twice ever, and never when making a stick check.

I'll take a pic in a minute to show you.

I wish I could take a pic with gloves, but they're at home right now.
