Perhaps. Back then the players were also regular guys who made normal salaries and some of them had second jobs in the offseason... It was easier for the media to be friendly with them and relate to them as people. Now they make more money than you can dream of, get all the hot girls and act like superstars so the media acts with them like it acts with Hollywood stars, by photographing them when they flash their kittycat in a taxi, or whatever embarrassing semi-scandal they do.
