Naturally they have the same amount of money to spend in relation to other leagues as in previous years, so it's due to other reasons. To list some:

- Teams have been wary of the uncertainty associated with acquiring NHL players ever since the lockout talk began
- Coaches don't want temporary additions messing up their system
- Players have expressed their concern with losing their jobs, teams may be listening to the PA
- Foreign NHL players who are available have limited marketing value
- Many of the best-known domestic players can't/won't start the season yet (Numminen, Timonen, Selšnne, S Kapanen, Lehtinen)
- Taxation makes it a lot cheaper to acquire a player later this fall; some saw better options (Kiprusoff, Berg)
