I'm guessing New Jersey would want a type of overpayment like Fehr and/or Eminger, and a 1st (really steep, I know).
why would NJ (a team that contends every year) trade a young, already #1 center, and one of their few true offensive talents, for some prospects and futures? especially now, with Niedermayer maybe having only one year left in Jersey?? it might be overpayment in terms of assets, but it doesn't really do Jersey any good.

I can't see a contender like Jersey dealing an established player for prospects and futures with a rebuilding team like the Caps.... makes no sense for them.
