Can't see how he can just void that contract and go where he pleases. I believe that he can be signed by the Canucks and then released from his present Moose contract. However, would not be released if signed somewhere else. Not sure of this but have heard the Canucks have one year window to sign him which, I guess, relates to the contract he has with the Moose.
I think in principle you're right that if a player is not under contract he can go anywhere. Yet, I believe if he is in the organization (such as farm club) then matters can be worked out between the farm club and the parent club.
Wouldn't the Canucks effectively buy him from the Moose? I thought that was one of the benefits for AHL teams finding talent. If they developed one of their own players to the point of being NHL ready, an NHL team could buy out the contract before signing the player.
I don't know this for sure. But, I just thought there was a financial plum for the AHL club.
