there is no negotiation. Right or wrong, the owners want it one way, a cap + other things negotiateble, and the players do not want a cap. Unless the players decide they can live with a cap, I don't see how it gets resolved, as like you said, these owners are billionaires and hockey currently is an afterthought to many of their investments. So they can't go in and negotiate unless they come to the owners' terms (which then isn't much of a negotiation).
