Purinton and Cairns were horrible skaters. It's a problem that he may be able to overcome. Mottau was actually a good skater, so it's tough to compare. Perhaps if you saw Burke Henry skate at the beginning (he too became better and I think he's actually getting some NHL time with the 'Hawks), as well as Brendl's first camp, in which his skating was a disaster. Shooting the puck, and doing it often, and getting his skating up to Cairns' or Purinton's (or Langon's) ability could secure him a spot somewhere as a PP specialist and a defensive third pairing (with his size and willingness to play it tough) somewhere. He doesn't need to skate like Leetch. He will obiously have to work extremely hard and perhaps a reason he fell to #8, among others things, is scouts have placed their bets against him working that hard.
