This sounds like your typical ACL injury from changing directions quickly.
Go see your doctor to determine the severity of your ACL injury. A Grade 1 injury with no damage to the other ligaments will heal with some time off and
To answer your question about muscle balance... your knee requires the following muscles to be strong, stable, flexible, and balanced in strength:
Quads (thigh muscles)
Gluteus Medius (muscle attached to the hip)
It's hard to say why your knee was injured w/o further evaluation, but my guess is that your muscles were stiff or weakened from your workout.
