I don't mind using a pick on a "safe" prospect with a limited offensive upside, expecially if it's not our only pick in the 2nd round. And it's not like Maloney picked him out of the blue a la Falardeau. He was rated the #20 North American skater by Central Scouting. ( I guess he has everything you want in a hockey player except hands.)
In a normal year, I'd consider him a third rounder, but this draft seems a little weak in the offensive talent department in the second round.
He's probably not the player I would have taken. We have stockpiled a decent number of character players already, and they are always more readily available then skill guys. I really liked the sound of Lyamin at the time, and Carl Soderberg sounds interesting as well, but I guess we just have to trust the scouts with this one. In all honesty, if this guy turns into a Tucker or Barnaby then everyone wins, but his hands make me a bit skeptical. A guy like Barnaby could net you some points while playing his game, but I dont know about Byers.
