Some body please correct me if I'm wrong, but since when has the NHL just wanted a "cap"? The only offer they've made is for a hard cap, not a soft cap. There is a difference. But now I hear Bettman just talking about a generic cap. When did this happen?
Well, the NHL may have gone in there talking "cost certainty" and "tying salaries to revenue", but in any negotiation that is the starting point. From that point the union simply said "no" and did not negotiate even a soft cap. So, while Bettman may not have negotiated with himself to come to a new starting point of a soft cap, he may have dropped a hint here and there.
