Contrary to many others here, it appears, I think Zherdev will be well worth the 3.9 million a year, provided he is in a team that fits him. Ie. one that plays attacking hockey and where he does not have to create all the offense himself, but rather supplement it. Put him next to a strong center who can score and you have yourself something really interesting.

The problem is that this happens so late in the game that it is hard to identify teams that both match that criterion, and also have cap-space (either self-imposed or top-level) to take him on.

For that reason I think Zherdev will either have to sign for less/much less than what he wants for one year with a team that gives him that situation where he can subsequently turn in a bumper year that earns him a big contract - or he can take the money in the KHL and wait for better financial days in the States for a couple of years, after which he can always go back as an UFA. Not a bad situation to be in for him regardless.
