I sprained my ankle badly playing soccer a couple of years ago. My foot rolled over another guy's foot and the ankle itself actually hit the ground even though I was standing straight. It can be seriously painful, with a lot of swelling. Without an X-ray, it can be difficult to tell if the ankle is broken or not, so it's not strange that they took him to hospital.

The bad news is that a sprain can be just as serious as a fracture -- if it's a bad one, you need to limit the mobility of the joint and then do physical therapy to get it back to strength. The good news is that it's not the type of injury that should really prevent him from staying in shape, as you can usually walk on it and use an elliptical machine, so long as the injury is supported.
