theres really only 2 spots open at camp the way i see it. im sure gilroy is a lock. the 6th spot and then the extra dman.
im predicting right now that one of your young dmen will be ilka heikkenin.
hes got a good 2 way game and can shoot it hard. skates well good size. hes solid. and hes an '84 same age as gilroy. i predict hes the guy thats going to stand out the most in camp.
pencil him in along with ....... whomever plays the best of sangs, mdz, potter and sauer as the 7th man. but, again i think that 6th spot will be fluid. the 6th spot and 7th may be interchangeable really.
itll look like this
staal/girardi
redden/gilroy
rozy/ *
* heikkenin/potter/sauer
that 6th/7th spot be alternated alot early on with all the guys who show well in camp getting chances on callups. kinda like an extended camp. it may not be settled for a few months into the season before someone steps up and grabs that job with a few goals and some steady d play.
if it is heik in that 6th spot, this defense will have alot more offensive ability to breakout plays with good passes and skating than last year team. also, both heik and gilroy shoot it very well.
