Agreed. It's kind of similar to what the Yankees did with A-Rod when he came back from the same surgery: rest him every few days or play him at DH.
Hockey is far more physical than baseball, so if they want Gabby to sit out on some practices, that's fine with me. Better to be safe than sorry.
This is one of the risks that the Rangers incurred by acquiring a player with an injury history who has recently undergone hip surgery. They shouldn't require Gaborik to engage in any unnecessary activities to that might aggravate his hip.
