Legends of Hockey:
Defenseman Alexei Kasatonov was one of the top blue liners in Russia throughout the 1980's. IN 1981, when the Russians won the Canada Cup, Kasatonov was named to the tournament All-Star Team. That year he also was named a Russian All-Star a feat he would repeat in each of the next seven seasons. In that stretch he also participated in three Olympic tournaments and won two gold's and a silver, won five World Championships and 11 National Titles in the Soviet Union. Throughout this time he was paired with Russian legend Slava Fetisov and many hockey observers considered them to be the best defensive pair outside of the NHL.
Jim Proudfoot in the Toronto Star:
Kasatonov is a bear of a man at 6'1 and 215 pounds, but is also a quick and clever attacker.
Fetisov is like Denis Potvin, cruel and efficient in his own zone and utterly dynamic on the attack.
Kasatonov is almost a duplicate.
Kasatonov scored 125 goals, 213 assists, and 338 points in 569 Soviet League games. He scored 56 goals in 299 games with the Soviet national team.
Soviet league all-star - 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988
Canada Cup tournament all-star – 1981
World Championship all-star – 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1991
Best defenceman, World Championship - 1985
Kasatonov joined the NHL halfway through the 1989-90 season.
From the Hockey News after this season
Kasatonov, who joined the New Jersey Devils Jan. 2, finished the regular season as their best defenseman. He adjusted faster than Fetisov and XXXXXXXX and exhibited a higher skill level.
Kasatonov was 6-15-21 and plus 15 in 39 games this season. He will report to training camp next fall as the team's number 1 defenseman.
Although Kasatonov was past his prime in the NHL, he still
led the Devils in plus-minus
during his first three seasons.
Kasatonov was known as one of the strongest men in hockey, and was willing to fight when necessary. He fought Swedish agitating defenceman XXX XXXXXXXXXX in the 1985 World Championship, and had several fights in the NHL.
