Sometimes people die because they were wearing a seat belt and would have lived if they didn't have it on, but I don't think I would recommend not wearing one because "sometimes it just happens".

If you played up until junior, you probably have decent reflexes and can move in time. Some of us are just too slow, too uncoordinated and too old to react in time. I've had plenty of sticks hit my shield and when I've tried to play without one, I find that anytime the puck could come up, I'm flinching. But that's just me.
