38th injury

Sami Salo - the Land Rover (at least he is not a Fiat or Yugo) -
Salo suffers yet another breakdown

Knee this time: Almost-always-banged-up blueliner faces 38th injury of career
By Gordon McIntyre, The Province October 11, 2009

Sami Salo’s like a 1996 Land Rover: He looks imposing and gets the job done — when he’s not breaking down.

But like a road-worn English SUV, something can go wonky at any time and when it does, it’s costly and takes time to fix.
Until he hurt his knee, Salo was playing 21:20 a game; only Calgary’s Jay Bouwmeester gets more ice time this young season.

“Sami’s a great player and every time he’s in our lineup, just look at the stats,” coach Alain Vigneault said Sunday. “Our team wins a lot more games than it loses.”

That’s true — and it’s what Vigneault said during the playoffs, and last January and last November and all the other times Salo has missed significant stretches.

That $3.5-million cap hit breaks down to about $60,000 per actual game played.

A healthy player making that much per game would earn almost $5 million a season.

And that’s the situation the Canucks are stuck with: Paying Salo on a games-played basis like he’s Mike Green, but getting his services only three-quarters of the time.

Salo came at a bargain, but his maintenance costs are high.
