Gainey gets blamed for letting players walk (a common occurence in a salary cap world) and then will get blamed for the one guy he did trade (Huet). It's not a very sensible complaint.
But last season there was even less of an issue. Gainey was not going to sell off the team at the deadline with the team in 5th place. He was not going to get anything out of a shelved Lang and Tanguay. Komisarek wasn't playing great. Kovalev had been sent to his room to think. How much would he have gotten out of that, even if he'd somehow gotten insane and decided to sell with the team squarely in a playoff position?
There wasn't much to be had even if you somehow are going to make the case Gainey should have sold, and without the benefit of hindsight, you absolutely can't make that case.
