Meh, I've always said it. If Rivet got us gorges and pacioretty and anahiem wanted one of our Ds. We could've sent Souray packing and prob got Bobby Ryan.
Yeah, I get fighting for a playoff spot and all, but at a certain point, some GM has got to take advantage of his assets and make some improvements. It's known people overpay at deadline, and for a team desperately lacking a true star prospect, combining picks/prospects and so on would get us a top 5 pick in a draft, if not 2 top 10 picks.
Say we traded souray back then for a anahiem's first and some random young player(say a type of package we got for rivet). We'd have the 12th overall pick, the 22nd and the 30th and this is assuming we got the first from anahiem and not a 20-25th pick team.
That draft alone we could've got moved our 12th up to a top 5, got karl alzner, got pacioretty at 22 and prob taken a shot at a big center in the draft too.
Yes, looking back, we could always just do something like that, i get it. But I am concerned about this team's core. You know, free agency isn't for your core, it's for additional players. Say, chicago is pretty much all homegrown, add Hossa as a complimentary scorer and it's incredible. If it were us, Hossa would be our core after acquiring him. Yes, it works sometimes, but having a strong base of young talent, before spending on free agency makes life easier, otherwise, while not impossible, it is harder to build a cup contender. Pittsburg has such a strong center group that they just take anyone as a winger cuz the team is good enough before the player comes. Without gionta, cam and our acquisitions, we're nothing. It's sad.
It's the way it is right now, so we'll deal, but safe to say, I used to be a huge gainey supporter but I've lost faith in him for more than just this. I like the acquisitions we added, I just think the original young core wasn't strong enough and he didn't address that at the draft...ever.
