From Gormley, this afternoon:

Holmgren said Gagne has agreed that surgery is needed but would like to “cover all his bases” by visiting another specialist. Holmgren said the length of Gagne’s recovery period can only be determined once his surgery is performed.

Holmgren said he is hopeful Blair Betts (shoulder) and Ryan Parent (groin) will be cleared to play Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes and does not anticipate a roster move to replace Gagne, adding he has no interest in signing free agent Brendan Shanahan, who left the Devils during training camp.

“Part of my job is alwasy to try to improve the hockey team,” I like the team, I think we have to bear down on our chances and maybe dig a little deeper. Certainy nobody around here is accepting the fact lightly we are where we are right now. We need to get better if we want to win more hockey games.”
