I have to agree that the owners are their own worst enemies. What you have are multi-millionaires/billionaires with big egos that will do whatever it takes to win a Cup for their city, and they don't have the foresight to see what will happen to the pay structures from signing players to stupid contracts.

Then, what I believe was one of the worst things done to hockey was the releasing of player salaries. What you created are players that see one guy getting more than themselves, and they feel they are at least as good as the other guy, and the salaries usually go up. You wouldn't have players like Gaborik and Havlat wanting the same or close to the same as what Richards makes. If the salaries were kept under wraps in the new CB, it may in fact sort of act like a salary one knows what the other guys makes, and no one's egos are hurt.
