Exactly. There are other bands that influenced The Smiths and Joy Division, bands that influenced those bands, etc etc to the beginning of time. But Nirvana was a more distinct, noticeable change in the sound at the time, which is why they're so well known about it.

exactly, which is why it's absurd to say that Nirvana "changed" music. They did not, they might have opened up the majorities eyes to a then non-mainstream style and genre, but to change music is a feat that Nirvana was not responsible for.
