Lets have a look at the stats from last year:

GP G A PTS +/- PPG ES GWG Icetime/game

KOVALCHUK ATL L 81 41 46 87 -10 16 24 6 23:41

SPEZZA OTT C 78 22 33 55 +22 5 17 3 14:38

Lets do some simple math shall we?
We can also all do the math on who had the more skilled team surrounding him (Spezza put up with teams 2nd/3rd pairings for the good part of the season, as well as had a team of great players), as well as who had the superior defenders covering him (Kovalchuck put up with teams top defensive units, and dominated). I may be wrong, but if Kovalchuck played with some of the Senators players (IE, Alfredsson or Hossa, even if it was just occasionally like Spezza's time with them was) he'd have gone well over the 100 point plateau. He's just that good.

I'd take Kovalchuck over Spezza any day of the week, however from the Sens point of view, I do see why some fans would take him.
