I think he's a fairly smart guy and he does seem to do his research on opposing teams. This is probably a strange criticism but IMO, he just talks too much. He feels as if its his job to talk during every spare moment.
For instance, I've been watching the Red Wings broadcast recently since I got the package and I realized that it's really nice to have quiet moments during the game. Like on an icing when the players are doing a line change or if a puck goes out of play... there's no need to fill those couple of seconds with pointless drivel. If something needs to be said than say it but I always get the impression that Joe feels obligated to speak during every single opening he can get. It's OK to take a breather for a couple of seconds here and there.
